TREES MAKE RAIN & MAGIC MOUNTAIN

Some years ago I heard it said that rainfall is higher in areas where trees are growing; I made this series in response to that insight, returning to my ponderings during a season I spent as a tree planter in British Columbia in the late 1970’s. The authenticity of this idea is powerfully affirmed in the last section of The Salt of the Earth, Wim Wenders’ 2014 film about the photographer Sebastião Salgado.

Huerfano and Magic Mountain were painted around the same time as Trees Make Rain, part of a contemplation of the earth’s numinosity revealed in an ever-circulating exchange between sky and land.
