Some ideas are elaborated in images and stories. Deep imaginal ideas in which different orders of being are mingled are found in abundance in mythologies throughout the world. The old Greek word μῦθος/mythos is the deep rumbling of life that can only be elaborated in stories. In his book Mind and Nature: A Necessary Unity, Gregory Bateson says that thinking in stories “does not isolate human beings as something separate from the starfish and the sea anemones, the coconut palms and the primroses. Rather, if the world be connected, … thinking in terms of stories must be shared by all mind or minds, whether ours or those of redwood forests and sea anemones.”
