Walking in the forests on the west coast of Canada led me to think about the many realms encompassed within the terrestrial system, and to consider ways that masking has been used throughout the world used to access what David Abram calls “more-than-human” dimensions. In his book The Old Ways Gary Snyder describes ritual traditions in which masks plays a part as an exchange between the human and non-human powers, one that “allows some individuals to step totally out of their human roles and put on the mask, costume, and mind of Bison, Bear, Squash, Corn, or Pleiades; to re-enter the human circle in that form and by song, mime, and dance, convey greeting from the other realm.” These series of sculptures begins with that idea. They are not meant to be worn, rather to be contemplatively donned.
